Every day the body deals with “Oxidative Stress” due to the production of “Free Radicals”. Free Radicals are an atom with an unpaired electron. They are reactive in nature and cause something called Oxidative Stress.
Think of an apple without its skin, within a few minutes it starts to turn brown. This is a good example of oxidation. Every second, of every day, our body is dealing with oxidation.
Uncontrolled Oxidation results in:
- Rapid aging (Skin, organs)
- Cardiovascular Damage (Cardiovascular disease)
- DNA Damage (Cancer)
- Inflammation (Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Lupus)
- Weakend Immune System (Catch colds and flu’s easily, increased risk for infection)
Antioxidants counteract or suppress oxidative damage, hence the word “Anti- Oxidant”
- Prevents and reverses aging
- Strengthens immune system
- Decrease inflammation (eliminates pain)
- Protects DNA from oxidative damage (reduced risk for cancer, fights cancer!)
- Heals the Cardiovascular system
At this point I am sure you are starting to see why antioxidants are essential to our health. Now the question you are surely thinking is how do I get more antioxidants into my body? The answer to that is simple, look to nature! Eat lots of colourful fruits and veggies. Nature has been advertising its antioxidants through the colours of its fruits and veggies, and beans.
If you want to increase your antioxidant intake your daily minimums are as follows: 2-3 servings of fresh (organic) fruits daily and 3-5 servings of fresh (organic) vegetables daily. Look for foods that are naturally: red, yellow, orange, purple, green and black. Choose a variety of these colours each day. These colours are natures way of showing you they contain powerful antioxidants (beta-carotene, carotenoids and flavonoids)
Fruits and Vegetables with high sources of Antioxidants include: Acai, berries, prunes, peppers of all varieties, spinach, kale, carrots, red and purple grapes, eggplant, beans.
Do not be fooled by products that offer you isolated antioxidants. Studies consistently show that the use of isolated antioxidants are not nearly as effective in their antioxidant capacity as antioxidants that are consumed from food sources. Some singular antioxidants when taken in an isolated form can actually become a “pro-oxidant”,meaning they can promote oxidation.
Antioxidants are best when taken as they naturally occur in nature, and remarkably more effective. After 8 years of studying nutrition and the last couple years specializing in nutrition for cancer, the most effective way to get more antioxidants in your body for the most potent effect is through organic food.
