Life as a Nutritionist – Food INC

Today I found the rare opportunity to sit and watch a documentary with my oldest son. Being a mom of four children means that daytime TV is infrequent, and often continuously interrupted with requests, spills and the bustling activity of busy household.  We are a new family to the world of Netflix and I was thrilled to discover that there are several documentaries I have anticipated watching.  Food INC was one of those documentaries and late this morning, I decided it was as good a time as any to sit and watch this documentary on how our food is being produced and the implications mass production has on our health and the environment.

At the end of viewing this information with my son,(he was shocked to say the least and is at this present moment searching for Genetically modified corn as an ingredient in his favourite foods) I feel happy and yet somewhat apprehensive to have shared this information with him.  Is this information appropriate for an 11 year old boy?  I am not sure many parents would agree 100% with this content, but I believe (aside from some footage of the butchering of animals) this information could be incredibly valuable as my hopes is that it will impact his choices and purchases in the future.  As consumers we MUST remember our every single one of our purchases support the industry that supplies our products, food included.

It’s a sad realization that our farmers are pressured to use GMO seeds and spray thousands of pounds of chemicals on these foods as they grow.  It is an even sadder fact, that there are families starving in our communities simply because they lack the money to purchase food, not because there is a shortage of it. Or they are forced to fill their bodies with cheap, processed and toxic foods because a burger on the dollar menu in reality costs less than a head of broccoli!

Modern farming revolves around FASTER, FATTER, BIGGER AND CHEAPER.

They want to Grow Faster

Grow Fatter Animals

Produce Bigger crops

And do it as cheaply as possible

This unfortunately Results in

Fast Food

Fatter Bodies

Bigger Health Consequences

Cheaper labour resulting in a population that can only afford the garbage food of society.

The meat industry alone creates such a toxic product, that tainted meat with acid resistant strains of E-Coli is the norm not the exception.  This is such a problem with the modern meat industry that people die every year from E-Coli poisoning from not just meat products but even from vegetable products that have been cross contaminated with these strains of E-Coli from the meat industry (e.g. Spinach).  On top of all this it is estimated that 70% of meat is treated with chemical Ammonia to help manage the bacteria content (which is entirely the result of mass farming and butchering). If you`re not sure about the health consequences of Ammonia, simply Google it.

I had to pause this documentary at one point and take a few moments to collect myself, as a mother describes how she lost her child (still in diapers) in just 12 days after eating a hamburger tainted with E-Coli.  The documentary then goes on to explain how every hamburger you eat at a local fast food restaurant is made up of the meat of at least 1000 cows!

Much of this is hardly new information for me, but the fact that it is so well explained in this documentary gives me hope that there is a potential for a different future.  We are ``waking up``, and despite the fact that the food industry wants us to remain ignorant consumers of their poisonous foods, we are learning the truth and the truth gives us a great deal of power!

I highly encourage you to take the time in the very near future to watch the documentary Food INC.  In the meantime I also want to encourage you to make the following Three changes:

1)      Always Choose Organic! As much as possible. This is a food industry that truly has our best interests in mind.  Look for organic before you consider anything else.

2)      Shop Local. Did you know it’s estimated that the amount of energy required to transport a single cow to the processing plant is 60-70 litres of oil.  We are blessed to be surrounded with good Canadian Farmers who treat their livestock with care and grow produce as best they can. Support your local farmer and let them know you want local, organic food for your family.  Farmers markets are a great place to shop every week.

3)      Avoid Junk Food.  Junk foods include chips, most cereal, granola bars, soda, French fires, donuts, most crackers, white flour products and anything with food colouring or added sugar and everything from your local fast food restaurant.  Basically if it does not look the way the earth provided it for you, it’s damaging to your health.  This is a hard one for most families. Working with a reputable Nutritionist in your area is a great way to learn how to do this well!

I don’t need to tell you there is a serious problem with the health of many people around us. Cancer is tearing families’ apart, food companies are feeding us chemical laden foods that make us addicted, fat and destroying our chances for a healthy future.  The hardest realization is that we are funding this every time we make an uneducated purchase.

You however have the power to feel the benefits of health every single day and the power to help create a better world and environment for your children and grandchildren.  We have that power in each and every one of us; we only need to do this by making better choices and being aware of what we support each time we do!

Cancer Education is Key to Prevention!

Over my journey as a Nutritionist with specializations in complimentary cancer modalities, I have learned one BIG thing, and that is Cancer is Preventable and even reversible so long as the “environment” (your body) does not promote it.

I am a true believer that there are many causes and factors that go into the development of cancer in the body.  In the Cancer Education Program we look at the possible causes of cancer including:
                - A weakened immune system
               - Environmental toxicity
                - Dietary links
                - Acid/Alkaline balance

When we understand what puts each of us at risk for developing cancer we can be better prepared to avoid it.  There are many documented cases showing complementary and alternative treatments do work, either prior to, during or after medical treatments, and even in cases where a person chooses to not undergo medical treatments.  We will spend a great deal of time covering many natural treatments including:

                - The Anti-Cancer Diet

                - Anti-Cancer Vitamins

                - Anti-Cancer Herbs found in your back yard

                - Anti-Cancer Recipes

Included in this program is a cooking session where we will prepare some fun and easy recipes designed to protect your body from cancer and its destructiveness.

At the end of the course we will each prepare our own Anti-Cancer Programs where you will outline what you need to do promote health and vitality.

If you have a history of cancer, family history or if you are a wellness educator within your work place this is likely one of the most valuable programs you can take. It will give you the know how to protect yourself and your friends and family.

Knowledge is power and in this case it might be lifesaving!

Your Health Is Greatly Determined By Your Diet

Being in the health and wellness field for over eleven years, nine of which as a Nutritionist I have seen many diseases and heard every reason under the sun as to the cause of those ailments.  I agree that there are many influences that contribute the development of many of today’s common diseases.  Genetics, stress, environmental toxicity and just pure luck, seem to all have a place in development of most conditions I work around.  However there is one factor that has in my opinion the biggest impact on your health and your risk for most diseases and that is your diet.

What you put into your body directly determines your health.  Eat like crap and feel like….. I am sure I don’t have to fill in that blank.  Eat nourishing life giving foods and feel nourished and full of life!  Our body has the amazing ability to heal and repair itself and it is always striving to be in a place of health and balance.  The Foods We Choose To Eat Either Build Upon Health And Wellness Or They Are Encouraging Disease And Illness.

Lets look at Type Two Diabetes for example.  Elevated blood sugar levels over long periods of time (from eating the wrong foods – such as high glycemic foods), causes the body to continually produce insulin.  Eventually the body’s cells become resistant to insulin resulting in insulin resistance aka Type Two Diabetes.  How about High blood pressure. Lets take look at the dietary link to HBP. Modern diets tend to be high in sodium which is a known contributor to HBP.  Also it is well documented that fruits and vegetables are cardio protective, and yet most of us do not eat the minimum 10 servings a day.  What about cancer, it thrives in a low oxygen, acidic environment. Those who eat more fruits and vegetable daily (high in oxygen and alkalizing) statistically have a significant reduction in their risk for most cancers. Most of us know this, and yet I see people daily in clinic who some days eat less than a single serving of a in natural form serving of fruit or vegetables. Which leads me to……

If you want health you should first start with your diet. A Genetic Predisposition Is Not A Guarantee For Any Illness, But A Poor Diet Is!  To learn more about healthy eating visit my website www.AlisaHerriman.com and check out the courses and workshops.

Life as Nutritionist - Feeling Blessed!

Life as a nutritionist is really just a never ending journey of learning and sharing.  I have been blessed with a successful career as a nutritionist, educator and cancer practitioner. I get to spend my working hours helping others learn, grow and improve their health.  I would be hard pressed to think of a better, or more rewarding career.  I am a firm believer in Karma, what we put out we get back and my desire to help others learn to love themselves by nourishing their body, mind and spirit has offered me rewards beyond my imagination.
I am blessed with the experiences of meeting people of all varieties. Those I have had the pleasure of working with fill my heart with appreciation of their trust in myself and my knowledge.  It is a heavy load sometimes to work as a practitioner.  My goal as such is to help each person as best as I can with the knowledge I have, and it carries with it a great responsibility.  My reputation rides with each person I work with and my heart becomes entwined with each soul I encounter.  Thankfully I have been blessed with an incredible clientele of the best quality people, and for that, the hard work and responsibility is worth it!

I have also been blessed to work with a health line that I honestly believe is the best health line available. Made entirely from organically grown fruits and veggies, Juice Plus has allowed me to offer my clients the best possible nutritional supplement available. And with that recommendation we see incredible results.  I have used this line with terminal cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia, obesity and children and achieved results beyond my expectation, time and time again.  It fills my heart to know that I can offer my clients and family (even my children) quality nutrition in formulation that allows the ingredients to work synergistically together.

Being a Health Educator with Juice Plus (anyone reading this can do the same) has allowed me the opportunity to continue my education under reputable physicians who also believe in the power of concentrated nutrition. I have trained under Dr. Sears http://www.askdrsears.com/  who has been recommending Juice Plus in his practice for many years. And Dr Hardy, a Pathologist who now resides in Ontario.  I have had the pleasure of dining with other physicians who recommend Juice Plus and look forward to future education this company offers through many other reputable physicians.

NSA – Founder of Juice Plus recently sent myself and 80 others to Ottawa for life changing leadership training where we learned more about just how much the company values its customers and its Representatives (Health Educators).  The experience of this weekend is beyond words.  Juice Plus is a company that truly cares!  They care about having the best health products in the world, they care about offering us the best training on the planet, and they care about offering their customers first class products and services.  This is a company that invests in its customers more than any company I have ever seen!

I wanted to sit and share this with you all because, I feel blessed to have created such a wonderful career that offers me so much happiness.  I hope to inspire some of you the make the same choices I did and choose a life that offers assistance to others in exchange for a full heart and knowing you are doing the right thing.  Making choices that focus on the wellness of others allowed me a never ending career that offers hope to all I encounter and it brought me a company that supports, educates and encourages me to continue my work (Juice Plus).  I am thankful.

Do You Invest in Your Wellness?

In doing some research for a new course I am writing for health professionals I came to a very sudden and disturbing revelation.  Most of us are not investing in our wellness.  We invest in our homes, our families, savings plans etc. yet many of us have no active wellness Plan in place.

This bring me back to an Indian Proverb “A healthy man has many wishes, a sick man has but one”.

What would you do if you did not have your health?  Perhaps you don’t have your health, how does it affect your quality of life?  I remember doing a TV appearance for Rogers TV and during the hour long program, the host stopped us and said “wow living health sure does take a lot of time”.  The practitioner I was on the show with replied with “Yes and so does Diabetes”.  I then asked the host, “what would you rather spend your time doing?”

I ask you that right now.  Do you invest daily into your wellness?

According to Canadian Statistics too many of us are not!

- Stats Canada reports that almost 20 of men over 65 have diabetes.

- 3 of 7 deaths in Canada are caused by Heart Disease (stats Can).

- Heart disease costs our Canadian economy almost 21 Billion Dollars Annually (conference board Canada 2010) in health care costs, lost wages and decreased productivity.

- It is estimated that 269,300 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed  and over 75,000 people (more people than the entire city of Orillia) will die from cancer is 2013. (Canadian Cancer Society)

These statistics are astronomical and if you are not concerned you should be!  Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease and most Cancers are entirely preventable and your diet and lifestyle is the single greatest contributing factor in whether or not you will be diagnosed with any of these.

So the question then lies in how do you invest in your wellness?

Really the secret formula for a daily wellness  investment is easy!

1)      Eat only foods that are as nature intended. If your food no longer resembles its original form, it is not good for you!

2)      Eat Organic.  Reduces the chemicals and GMO foods.

3)      Exercise daily.  Go for a walk, do yoga, hit the gym. Make time daily.

4)      Attend wellness lectures whenever you can.  Living well is a learning process.

5)      Do your own research.  Learning how foods affect your body will help you make better choices. Beware of fad programs or programs that offer a one size fits all approach.  It’s all about how the food you eat affects your health after digested.

6)      Use a whole food supplement.  Multi vitamins (isolates) are not well recognized or utilized by the body.  Use a whole food supplement that has clinical studies to back its efficacy.  I recommend Juice Plus.  www.simcoecountyjuiceplus.com

7)      Work with a professional.  If you are not sure where to start research local wellness professionals and ask for a reference or use a referral.  Make sure your practitioner is specifically trained in the area of expertise you are searching and maintains a high level of upgrading and registration.

8)      Understand we all start somewhere.  No one person can change everything over night.  Start with your worst habits or the easiest changes and live with them for a while to make sure you can maintain your new healthy habits.

I hope you can take the time to start to work on your own wellness programs and implement some of the listed strategies.  This is one investment that guarantee’s a return on investment!
